","description":"Hi Heather, my name is Lauren Kennedy and I attend the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont. I am studying exercise and movement science with hopes of becoming a physical therapist one day. For the first couple of semesters in college, students usually take general education courses like math, english, science, or any other general classes that are required to graduate. As the years go on, you're able to take classes that are more specific to your major and are probably more interesting. There are also elective courses that you can take. For example in my major it is not required for me to take an art class, but if I was really interested in art I could take any kind of art class and get credit for it as an elective course.
\n College is an awesome experience that everyone should have an opportunity to enjoy. At first, moving away from home is hard because you're going to a place where you probably don't know anyone and living with someone who you dont know. For me, it was difficult because I have a brother who is much older than me and I never had to share a room or a bathroom or the computer because he was never around. Now that I am at college it's a lot different because I'm living in a small room with someone who I had never met when I got here, so sharing such a small space was different. It was scary at first not knowing anyone, but everyone is in the same position as you and is as eager as you are to make friends. So far this year I've made an awesome group of friends who I get to hang out with everyday and the floor that I live on is like its own little family. I get along with my roommate great and have met other people in all of my classes.
\n In college there are so many opportunities to be yourself and do what you want. There's activities and clubs related to just about anything you can think of. There is always some sort of event going on like a sporting event or a movie night which are also good opportunities to meet more people and make friends.

\n I'm a freshman in college in my second semester. Something that I didn't expect would happen is that at the beginning of the school year I had two roommates and we were in a forced triple which means that the room was meant for only two people, and three people had to live there. One of my roommates lives in the town that my college is in so she was never around and barely slept in the dorm. Me and my other roommate Janelle bonded a lot while she was gone and we barely even got to know Amanda, our other roommate. By the end of the first semester she had told us that she was going to move out. Janelle and I were excited because that meant that our room would have a lot more space for us to live in. It was unexpected but you never know what can happen.
\n Something else I didn't expect was that my grades weren't as good as I had hoped they would be by the end of the first semester. I was always doing homework and studying but I guess it wasn't enough to get the grades I wanted. I wasn't too upset though because it was only my first semester and it takes a lot of time to figure out how to manage your time and find an appropriate balance between schoolwork and friends.
\n One way that a lot of people apply to college is to fill out the Common Application. If you go to www.commonapp.org you can see if your school accepts the common app. All you have to do is choose the schools on the application that you want to apply to, fill it out and send it to the school. You have to double check though because sometimes schools need another application in addition to the common app. You also have to attach an essay with it. I think there are some essay topic ideas that the common app gives you, but you want to pick a topic and write an essay that will set you apart from other people and make the school notice you and want to accept you. When you get into your sophomore or junior year of high school, you'll have plenty of meetings with guidance counselors and other advisors to help you through the whole process.

Once you find a bunch of colleges that seem interesting to you you'll want to make sure you go on a tour of the school to make sure it's a perfect fit for you! It's pretty fun going to visit a bunch of colleges because you'll get to see right away what you love and dont love and where you want to be.
\nThat's awesome that Ms. D is a good teacher! We used to skate together for a while until she went off to college but she still came back and visited which was always nice. I still skate a little bit at school but there isn't always available ice times at the rink so I don't get to skate as much as I'd like to. Skating is a lot of fun, you should learn!
